(untitled) Auschwitz, 1997

This suite of nine prints shows images of the main camp at Auschwitz taken in 1994. Shot primarily around the perimeter of the camp, each image has been rendered unsharp by a long exposure and a shaking camera. Each narrow vertical composition is the result of drastic cropping; only a part of the picture remains. Across the bottom of the suite run the central Hebrew words of the Jewish prayer for the dead, Kaddish – “May His holy Name be blessed for ever and ever”. All the letters of these words are rendered in gold gouache except for letters that occur in the unutterable name of God. Those letters are shapes cut out of the print.
